There are two kinds of life, and two kinds of salvation for humanity to obtain -- (Gk.) "zoe" life and (Gk.) "psuche" soul life -- Life Salvation and Soul Salvation. In addition, the requirements for obtaining Life or Soul salvation are not the same. Many believers are totally unaware of this reality. Many believe that Life Salvation and Soul Salvation are one in the same. As a result many people are working for a salvation that can only be receive as a gift. And many believers are not working for a salvation that can only be obtained by diligent costly growth. Jesus spoke of these two kinds of life salvations in the parable of the rich fool,
"Then one from the crowd said to Him, 'Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.' But He said to him, 'Man, who made Me a judge or an arbitrator over you?'  And He said to them, 'Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one's "zoe" life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses'.
Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: "The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. And he thought within himself, saying, 'What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?' So he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. And I will say to my soul
(psuche), 'Soul, (psuche), you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry."' But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul (psuche) be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?' So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God" (Luke 12:13-21).
The parable concentrates on the soul (psuche) which has the experience of life (e.g., take rest, eat, drink, be merry, v. 19). But if one lives for such experience alone, death marks the tragic loss and end of the soul - the end that (psuche) life. Conversely, the path of self-denial, willing subjection and suffering is the way of real life preservation, that is, the salvation of the soul (psuche). As Jesus said, "He who loves his (psuche) life will lose it, and he who hates his (psuche) life in this world will keep it for eternal (zoe) life" (John 12:25).

The Salvation of the soul life is gaining the fullness of life by denying ourselves, taking up our cross and following Christ.
Jim Elliot, a missionary to Ecuador, understood this teaching well. He literally gave is (zoe) life to gain the (psuch) life. He famously said, "He is no fool to give what he cannot keep, to gain what he cannot lose." He is an example of a faithful servant of Christ who made temporary sacrifices to gain permanent eternal rewards.
